UPDATE -- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
I've been doing some messing around with the possibility of running script contests on the Proboards site. Here's what I've found out so far.
The Good: 1) Any registered user can attach a PDF to any message. 2) If you're not a registered user you can see a thumbnail of that PDF, but you have to register to actually read it or download it. 3) Proboards has an active community and a site Admin has the ability to alter the site on an html and css level. So, in theory, you can make it do almost anything you want it to do. 4) The site is free -- unless you want more than 200 mb of storage -- more storage can be bought inexpensively. 5) Very flexible about adding moderators, additional admins, etc. on both a site basis or board by board. The Bad. 1) No known way to upload a PDF anonymously. (I'm pretty sure this could be overcome fairly easily by applying the rights normally attributed registered users to guests on the one board for the script contest.) But that requires someone with more html programming experience than I have. 2) No known way of verify who has viewed your script. 3) No known way of automatically scoring screenplays and tabulating those scores. 4) No known way to stop people from seeing script entries and reading/commenting on them until the end of the month. 5) No known way to parcel out the scripts for reviewers to comment on.
The Ugly. 1) Did I mention I'm not any good at html (or whatever is used now) programming?
Conclusion. 1) Until someone with more programming brains than I have gets involved, it's looks like the site is limited to posting messages and uploading PDFs of screenplays, that people can comment on, but at this point I don't see how to make it work as a contest. (I think at other, similar sites some people act as a clearinghouse, collect the scripts and then post them after the entry deadline.) Something like that could probably be done. 2) Theoretically with the right brains involved the site could be made to work, since there is access to the programming language.
Personal preferences (wish list) on script contests.
Everyone could enter every month -- but their entry wouldn't be valid if they didn't review at least half the entries for that month.
Two contests a month. One just for shorts, the other one would be similar to what MoviePoet ended with -- one page contests, maybe ten page contests, loglines, full-length scrips, short films, etc.
Now I'll go back to dreaming.
